A forward-thinking, high-achieving secondary school and Sixth Form in the London Borough of Redbridge is seeking an articulate, creative, and safety-conscious Teacher of Design & Technology to join their innovative Design, Engineering & Innovation faculty immediately. Set within a well-regarded East London suburban community, this immediate-start post is an outstanding opportunity for a D&T specialist, whether an experienced practitioner eager to lead A-Level Product Design or an ambitious Early Career Teacher (ECT), to foster material experimentation, CAD/CAM prototyping, and structural problem-solving across a high-aspiring student body.
About the Role
Stepping into the workshops for an immediate start, you will transform product concepts, material sciences, graphic communication, and digital fabrication into hands-on, high-rigor learning experiences. Joining a collaborative, technical team, you will deliver compelling lessons across Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 (GCSE Design & Technology / Engineering / Graphic Products), and Key Stage 5 (A-Level Product Design / Level 3 Technicals), equipping young designers and future engineers with the practical craftsmanship, spatial reasoning, and portfolio depth valued by top universities and modern design industries.
Environment: A fully resourced Outer London secondary campus featuring dedicated wood, metal, and plastics workshops, 3D printing suites, laser cutters, CNC machinery, and CAD software laboratories (e.g., SolidWorks, 2D Design, Adobe Suite)
Culture: A dynamic, safety-first learning community focused on design thinking, sustainable innovation, iterative prototyping, and driving strong academic and vocational progress
Key Responsibilities
Plan and deliver academically rich, practical D&T lessons across Key Stages 3, 4, and 5 covering material properties, workshop safety, CAD/CAM operations, mechanics, and design history.
Guide GCSE and A-Level candidates thoroughly through non-exam assessment (NEA) portfolio development, iterative modeling, and written exam preparation through structured technical tutorials and data-driven tracking.
Maintain strict workshop health and safety standards (DATA guidelines/COSHH compliance), ensuring routine machinery checks, safe tool handling, and clean working spaces across all practical areas.
Track, evaluate, and monitor student progress systematically, tailoring feedback to stretch ambitious young designers targeting university engineering and architecture programs while building core hand-tool confidence in developing learners.
Contribute actively to departmental enrichment, including national design challenges, STEM competitions, green-tech projects, and industry workplace visits.
Requirements
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an equivalent recognized teaching credential.
A strong academic degree in Design & Technology, Product Design, Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, or a closely related discipline.
Proven track record or demonstrated capability of delivering outstanding D&T instruction across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 (KS5/A-Level Product Design or Engineering teaching experience is highly desirable).
Valid DATA (Design and Technology Association) machinery safety accreditation and working proficiency across CAD/CAM software and traditional workshop equipment.
Exceptional classroom and workshop presence, strong technical communication skills, and an infectious enthusiasm for physical creation, engineering logic, and innovation.
Salary & Benefits
Pay Scale: Outer London Main / Upper Pay Scale (MPS/UPS Outer London, commensurate with experience), with potential TLR opportunities available for Key Stage D&T Lead, Workshop Safety Officer, or STEM Lead.
Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS), comprehensive continuous professional development (CPD), structured mentoring pathways, workshop access, and staff health and wellbeing benefits.
