Head of Mathematics – Secondary Academy in Bristol (January Start)

A thriving secondary academy in Bristol is seeking an ambitious Head of Mathematics to provide strategic leadership and pedagogical direction across its quantitative faculty on a full-time, permanent basis starting in January.

Job Overview

Mathematics is an expanding, high-performing department at this academy. The successful candidate will direct curriculum sequencing, instructional standards, and public examination performance across Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 (GCSE Higher/Foundation), and Key Stage 5 (A-Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics).

Working alongside senior leadership and subject specialists, you will line-manage department colleagues, lead exam moderation, drive targeted GCSE interventions, and prepare Sixth Form students for competitive STEM degree pathways (including STEP, MAT, and TMUA preparation). This is a full-time, permanent contract.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic vision, curriculum planning, and operational management for the Mathematics faculty

  • Teach mathematically rigorous lessons across Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 (A-Level Pure, Mechanics, or Statistics)

  • Line-manage, observe, and mentor departmental teachers through structured lesson reviews and faculty CPD

  • Coordinate preparation clinics for university admissions tests (STEP/MAT/TMUA) and UKMT challenges

  • Analyze student assessment tracking data to design targeted intervention clinics and mock exam reviews

  • Manage departmental budgets, digital software platforms, and external examination entries

  • Salary / Pay Rate: Leadership Scale (L6–L10 equivalent)

  • Key Curriculum: Edexcel / AQA Mathematics & Further Mathematics

Candidate Requirements

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with an honors degree in Mathematics, Statistics, or a closely related discipline

  • Demonstrated track record of outstanding GCSE and A-Level/Further Maths examination outcomes

  • Prior experience in departmental coordination, key stage leadership, or peer coaching

  • An active enhanced DBS check on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)
