Religious Studies Teacher | TLR Opportunity

Inspire Curiosity. Explore Beliefs. Shape Perspectives. Lead with Purpose.
Are you a passionate Religious Studies teacher who believes that understanding different beliefs, values and perspectives helps young people make sense of the world around them?
An established independent school in Reading is seeking an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and ambitious Religious Studies Teacher to join its teaching team. This is an exciting opportunity for a teacher who can bring religion, philosophy and ethics to life in the classroom, encourage thoughtful discussion and help students develop a deeper understanding of the diverse world in which they live.
For the right candidate, there is also an opportunity to take on additional responsibility through a Teaching and Learning Responsibility (TLR), offering the chance to contribute to curriculum development, support colleagues and play a wider role in the school's continued success.
Whether you are an experienced teacher looking for your next challenge or an ambitious practitioner ready to develop your leadership experience, this position offers the opportunity to share your expertise, introduce fresh ideas and make a meaningful contribution to students' academic and personal development.
More Than Teaching Religious Studies
Religious Studies encourages young people to question, reflect, debate and develop an understanding of beliefs and values beyond their own experiences. It provides opportunities to explore fundamental questions about identity, morality, faith, society and the human experience.
We are looking for a teacher who can create an engaging and inclusive learning environment where students feel confident expressing their views, challenging assumptions and considering different perspectives.
From exploring world religions and philosophical arguments to examining contemporary ethical issues, you will help students become reflective thinkers, respectful communicators and informed individuals.
Your role will include:
Delivering engaging Religious Studies lessons that challenge, motivate and inspire students across the relevant key stages.
Teaching topics covering world religions, beliefs, philosophy, ethics and contemporary moral issues.
Encouraging students to explore different religious and non-religious worldviews with curiosity, sensitivity and respect.
Developing students' critical thinking, analytical writing, evaluation and debating skills.
Preparing students for relevant public examinations, including GCSE and A-Level where applicable.
Planning creative, well-structured lessons that make complex philosophical and theological concepts accessible.
Monitoring student progress, assessing work and providing constructive feedback to support academic achievement.
Creating a positive classroom culture built on mutual respect, inclusion, open discussion and intellectual curiosity.
Using a range of teaching strategies and resources to support engagement and meet the needs of different learners.
Working collaboratively with colleagues on curriculum planning and the development of effective teaching practice.
Encouraging wider engagement through debates, discussion groups, enrichment activities and opportunities to explore religion, philosophy and ethics beyond the classroom.
Communicating effectively with parents and colleagues to support students' progress and wellbeing.
An Opportunity to Lead, Not Just Teach
A TLR is available for the right candidate.
We recognise that excellent teachers often have more to contribute beyond their own classrooms. For a suitably experienced candidate, this role offers the opportunity to take on additional responsibility and help shape the direction of Religious Studies within the school.
Depending on the successful candidate's experience and the school's priorities, the TLR may involve responsibilities such as:
Contributing to the development and implementation of the Religious Studies curriculum.
Supporting departmental planning and the consistent delivery of high-quality teaching.
Sharing effective teaching strategies and contributing to colleagues' professional development.
Monitoring student progress and identifying priorities for academic improvement.
Developing engaging curriculum resources and assessment practices.
Promoting religious literacy, critical thinking and an inclusive approach to exploring different beliefs.
Contributing to wider school initiatives, enrichment activities and improvement priorities.
The precise responsibilities and TLR level will be discussed with the successful candidate and confirmed by the school.
Who Will Thrive in This Role?
We are looking for someone who combines strong subject knowledge with enthusiasm, intellectual curiosity and a genuine commitment to helping young people succeed.
You will ideally bring:
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification.
A degree in Religious Studies, Theology, Philosophy or a related subject.
Experience teaching Religious Studies in a secondary school or comparable educational setting.
Strong subject knowledge across world religions, philosophy, ethics and contemporary issues.
An understanding of relevant curriculum requirements and examination specifications.
The ability to facilitate thoughtful discussion, encourage debate and present complex ideas clearly.
Excellent classroom management skills and the ability to establish a purposeful, supportive learning environment.
A commitment to inclusive teaching, respect for different beliefs and high academic standards.
Strong communication, organisational and interpersonal skills.
A collaborative approach and the confidence to contribute ideas to curriculum development.
A genuine passion for religion, philosophy, ethics and encouraging independent thought.
Previous experience of departmental responsibility, mentoring colleagues or leading curriculum initiatives would be particularly valuable for candidates interested in the TLR opportunity. Ambitious teachers ready to take their first step into subject leadership are also encouraged to apply.
Why Consider an Independent School?
An independent school environment can offer opportunities to contribute to a broad educational experience, develop meaningful relationships with students and take an active role in the wider school community.
This position offers the opportunity to:
Teach Religious Studies in an environment that values academic ambition and personal development.
Bring creativity and fresh perspectives to curriculum planning and lesson delivery.
Encourage students to explore different beliefs, values and ethical perspectives.
Promote respectful debate, independent thinking and religious literacy.
Contribute to enrichment activities that extend learning beyond the classroom.
Develop professionally within a collaborative teaching environment.
Explore additional leadership responsibilities through a potential TLR.
Make a meaningful contribution to the school's academic culture and wider development.
The Person Behind the Application
The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, reflective and approachable, with the confidence to challenge students intellectually while creating an environment where different viewpoints are welcomed and respected.
You will understand that successful Religious Studies teaching is about more than examination results. It is about developing informed, thoughtful and open-minded young people who can engage with complex questions, appreciate different perspectives and form reasoned opinions.
If you enjoy bringing philosophical and ethical debates to life, exploring the beliefs that shape societies and helping students develop their own understanding of the world, this could be an excellent next step in your career.
