An exceptional, high-achieving secondary school and Sixth Form in the London Borough of Redbridge is seeking an inventive, articulate, and dynamic Teacher of Design & Technology to join their forward-thinking STEM & Creative Arts faculty. Renowned for academic rigor, innovation, and pupil achievement, this school provides an outstanding platform for a D&T specialist, whether an experienced practitioner eager to lead A-Level Product Design modules or an ambitious Early Career Teacher (ECT), to inspire design thinking, practical craftsmanship, and modern digital fabrication across a driven student body.
About the Role
As a Teacher of Design & Technology, you will translate materials science, practical prototyping, CAD/CAM design, and engineering concepts into captivating, practical learning experiences. Joining a well-resourced and collaborative department, you will deliver high-rigor theoretical and workshop-based lessons across Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 (GCSE Design & Technology), and Key Stage 5 (A-Level Product Design / Systems & Control), empowering students to conceive, model, and manufacture solutions to real-world design challenges.
Environment: An excellent Outer London secondary school equipped with modern workshop suites, CNC routers, 3D printing labs, laser cutters, traditional woodworking/metalworking machinery, and dedicated CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360, 2D Design)
Culture: A dynamic, safety-conscious department where creative problem-solving, sustainable design, technical precision, and high academic standards are deeply embedded
Key Responsibilities
Plan and deliver academically rich, hands-on D&T lessons across Key Stages 3, 4, and 5 covering timber, metals, polymers, electronics, mechanism design, and iterative prototyping.
Prepare GCSE and A-Level candidates thoroughly for written examinations and non-exam assessment (NEA) design portfolios, utilizing live modeling and data-driven tracking.
Integrate cutting-edge digital design technology—including CAD/CAM software, 3D printing, and laser cutting—alongside traditional hand tool and machinery techniques.
Maintain rigorous health and safety protocols across all workshop spaces, working closely with technical staff to comply with DATA and CLEAPSS standards.
Contribute positively to department enrichment, such as greenpower engineering projects, design competitions, maker clubs, and university application guidance for architecture and engineering pathways.
Requirements
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an equivalent recognized teaching credential.
A strong academic degree in Design & Technology, Product Design, Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
Proven track record or demonstrated capability of delivering high-quality D&T instruction across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 (KS5/A-Level Product Design teaching experience is highly desirable).
Practical fluency across traditional workshop machinery and modern digital fabrication tools (CAD/CAM, 3D printing, laser cutting) alongside clear knowledge of national exam board specifications (e.g., AQA, Edexcel, OCR).
Solid understanding of workshop Health & Safety legislation, DATA guidelines, and CLEAPSS protocols.
Salary & Benefits
Pay Scale: Outer London Main / Upper Pay Scale (MPS/UPS Outer London, commensurate with experience), with potential TLR opportunities available for STEM Coordination, Key Stage D&T Leadership, or CAD/CAM Lead.
Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS), comprehensive continuous professional development (CPD), structured mentoring pathways, and access to staff health and wellbeing programs.
