An academically rigorous secondary school in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, is seeking an ambitious Head of Mathematics to lead its quantitative faculty on a full-time, permanent basis starting in January.

Job Overview

Mathematics is a flagship discipline within this school’s academic curriculum and Sixth Form pathways. The successful candidate will direct curriculum sequencing, instructional rigor, and exam performance across Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 (GCSE Higher Tier), and Key Stage 5 (A-Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics).

Working alongside senior leadership and a team of subject specialists, you will lead departmental coaching, standardize internal mock assessments, and mentor students targeting competitive university courses in Mathematics, Engineering, and Computer Science (including STEP and MAT preparation). This is a full-time, permanent contract.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide strategic vision, curriculum design, and operational management across the Mathematics faculty

• Teach mathematically rigorous lessons across Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 (A-Level Pure, Mechanics, or Statistics)

• Line-manage, observe, and mentor departmental teachers through lesson reviews and quantitative CPD

• Coordinate preparation clinics for university admissions tests (STEP/MAT/TMUA) and UKMT challenges

• Track student assessment data, implement targeted intervention groups, and oversee tier entries

• Manage departmental budgets, digital learning platforms, and external examination entries

Candidate Requirements

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with an honors degree in Mathematics, Statistics, or a closely related discipline

• Prior experience in departmental coordination, key stage leadership, or peer coaching

• An active enhanced DBS check on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)
