Head of Economics & Social Sciences – Secondary Academy in York (January Start)

A high-achieving secondary academy in York, North Yorkshire, is seeking an ambitious Head of Economics & Social Sciences to lead its commercial and social sciences pathways on a full-time, permanent basis starting in January.

Job Overview

Economics and Social Sciences represent some of the highest-enrolling and best-performing academic routes within this academy’s Sixth Form. The successful candidate will take strategic leadership over A-Level Economics, A-Level Psychology, and A-Level Sociology, directing curriculum sequencing, quantitative data analysis, and university entrance preparation.

Working closely with senior leadership, you will line-manage department colleagues, lead exam moderation, oversee enterprise competitions, and mentor candidates applying for competitive degree programs in Economics, PPE, and Psychology. This is a full-time, permanent contract.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership, curriculum mapping, and quality assurance across Economics, Psychology, and Sociology

  • Teach high-rigor lessons across A-Level Economics (Micro and Macro) and/or Social Sciences

  • Line-manage and evaluate department teachers through peer lesson observations and subject-specific CPD

  • Train Sixth Form pupils in quantitative data handling, economic diagrams, and 25-mark evaluative essay structures

  • Coordinate student enterprise initiatives, Young Enterprise competitions, and guest speaker lectures

  • Analyze assessment tracking data to design targeted revision clinics and mock exam interventions

  • Salary / Pay Rate: Leadership Scale (L6–L10 equivalent) or TLR1

  • Key Curriculum: AQA / Edexcel Economics, Psychology & Sociology

Candidate Requirements

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS, QTLS) with an honors degree in Economics, Social Sciences, or Finance

  • Proven track record of delivering top-tier Key Stage 5 examination outcomes

  • Prior experience in departmental coordination, key stage leadership, or peer coaching

  • An active enhanced DBS check on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)
