About the Role
As a Teacher of Music, you will transform musical theory, composition, performance techniques, and sound technology into captivating, practical learning experiences. Joining an energetic department, you will deliver high-rigor lessons across Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 (GCSE Music / Vocational Music Practice), and Key Stage 5 (A-Level Music / Level 3 Music Technology), equipping students with the creative, analytical, and technical skills needed for performance, higher education, and creative industry pathways.
Environment: A modern Outer London secondary school featuring purpose-built music suites, practice rooms, acoustic recording studios, Mac/DAW MIDI technology labs, and a full suite of orchestral and modern instruments
Culture: A collaborative, high-energy department where ensemble performance, concerts, theatrical productions, and artistic expression are celebrated across the school community
Key Responsibilities
Plan and deliver academically rich, practical Music lessons across Key Stages 3, 4, and 5 that build instrumental/vocal technique, music history, listening analysis, and composition skills using DAWs (e.g., Logic Pro, Cubase, Sibelius).
Prepare GCSE, A-Level, and vocational candidates thoroughly for performance assessments, composition portfolios, and written listening/appraisal examinations.
Direct and direct extra-curricular musical ensembles, including choirs, orchestras, jazz bands, rock groups, and peripatetic instrumental schedules.
Organize and produce major school performances, seasonal concerts, showcase events, and musical accompaniment for whole-school theatrical productions.
Track, evaluate, and monitor student progress, providing constructive feedback to refine performance craft while scaffolding musical notation and composition for developing learners.
Requirements
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an equivalent recognized teaching credential.
A strong academic degree in Music, Music Performance, Musicology, or Music Technology.
Proven track record or demonstrated capability of delivering high-quality Music instruction across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 (KS5/A-Level Music teaching experience is highly desirable).
Practical proficiency in at least one primary instrument/vocals, keyboard/piano fluency, and working knowledge of music software/DAWs alongside national examination specifications (e.g., Edexcel, AQA, OCR, Eduqas).
Inspiring stage presence, exceptional communication skills, and an infectious enthusiasm for musical diversity, performance, and creative technology.
Salary & Benefits
Pay Scale: Outer London Main / Upper Pay Scale (MPS/UPS Outer London, commensurate with experience), with potential TLR opportunities available for Expressive Arts Leadership, Extra-Curricular Music Lead, or Instrumental Coordinator.
Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS), comprehensive continuous professional development (CPD), structured mentoring, and access to staff health and wellbeing programs.
