Head of Art & Photography – Secondary Academy in Salisbury (January Start)

A vibrant secondary academy in Salisbury, Wiltshire, is seeking a visionary Head of Art & Photography to lead its Visual Arts department on a full-time, permanent basis starting in January.

Job Overview

The Visual Arts faculty is a celebrated, expressive pillar of this academy's curriculum and creative traditions. The successful applicant will hold strategic leadership over Key Stage 3 Art, GCSE Art & Design / Photography, and Key Stage 5 (A-Level Fine Art & Digital Photography).

Working alongside senior management, department teachers, and art technicians, you will curate annual student exhibitions, manage darkroom and digital media suites (Adobe Creative Cloud), direct Non-Exam Assessment (NEA) standardisation, and drive artistic outcomes. This is a full-time, permanent contract.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic direction, curriculum design, and operational management for Art and Photography

  • Teach practical studio and lens-based lessons across Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4, and Key Stage 5

  • Line-manage, observe, and mentor departmental teachers and visual arts technicians

  • Oversee GCSE and A-Level NEA portfolio verification, standardization, and exam board submissions

  • Maintain studio environments, printmaking facilities, and digital imaging hardware safely

  • Coordinate public student art exhibitions, regional gallery visits, and artist-in-residence workshops

  • Salary / Pay Rate: TLR1 or Leadership Scale equivalent

  • Key Curriculum: AQA / Edexcel Fine Art & Photography

Candidate Requirements

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with an honors degree in Fine Art, Photography, Visual Arts, or a related discipline

  • Proven track record of high GCSE and A-Level Art and Photography outcomes alongside leadership experience

  • Expertise across traditional fine art techniques and digital editing software (Photoshop, Lightroom)

  • An active enhanced DBS check on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)
