A vibrant, culturally diverse secondary school and Sixth Form in the heart of Inner London’s Borough of Hackney is seeking an articulate, enthusiastic, and dynamic Teacher of German to join their thriving Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) faculty. This is a stellar opportunity for a language specialist, whether an experienced educator looking to expand German uptake or a passionate Early Career Teacher (ECT), to inspire linguistic confidence, intercultural understanding, and fluent communication across a high-aspiring student body.
About the Role
As a Teacher of German, you will bring the language, culture, and contemporary society of the German-speaking world to life in the classroom. Joining an ambitious MFL department, you will deliver engaging, immersive lessons across Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 (GCSE German), and Key Stage 5 (A-Level German), alongside potential contributions to a secondary language (e.g., French or Spanish) at Key Stage 3 depending on your profile.
Environment: A progressive Inner London secondary school celebrated for strong global citizenship initiatives, modern language lab software, and high academic standards
Culture: A collaborative, communicative MFL team supported by foreign language assistants, shared digital schemes of learning, and visionary departmental leadership
Key Responsibilities
Plan and deliver interactive, communicative German lessons across Key Stages 3, 4, and 5 that build vocabulary, grammatical precision, listening comprehension, and spontaneous speaking skills.
Prepare GCSE and A-Level candidates thoroughly for national examinations across all four assessment pillars (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking) using data-driven progress tracking and targeted feedback.
Embed authentic cultural materials, literature, film, and news from German-speaking nations into daily teaching to broaden students' global perspectives.
Track and evaluate student progress, implementing targeted intervention strategies to stretch high-aspiring linguists while building confidence in developing learners.
Contribute positively to departmental enrichment, such as German film clubs, international exchange programs, language competitions, and university MFL pathway guidance.
Requirements
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an equivalent recognized teaching credential.
A strong academic degree in German, Modern Foreign Languages, or a closely related discipline (native or near-native fluency in German is essential).
Proven track record or demonstrated capability of delivering high-quality German instruction across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 (KS5/A-Level experience is highly desirable; ability to offer a second language at KS3 is an advantage).
Comprehensive knowledge of national MFL examination board specifications (e.g., AQA, Edexcel).
Excellent classroom presence, creative oral prompt techniques, and an infectious enthusiasm for language learning and European culture.
Salary & Benefits
Pay Scale: Inner London Main / Upper Pay Scale (MPS/UPS Inner London, commensurate with experience), with potential TLR opportunities available for MFL Key Stage Coordination or International Links Leadership.
Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS), comprehensive continuous professional development (CPD), structured onboarding, and access to staff health and wellbeing schemes.
