Role Overview

A vibrant secondary school in Lambeth is seeking a dedicated, reliable, and practical School Caretaker to join their facilities and site management team ASAP. In this essential non-teaching position, you will ensure the school environment remains safe, clean, secure, and fully operational for pupils, staff, and visitors. Working alongside the Facilities Manager, you will be responsible for day-to-day site security, keyholder duties, general DIY maintenance, health and safety monitoring, and supporting school events or community lettings.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out daily opening and closing procedures, unlocking and locking school gates, securing facilities, and setting security alarm systems.

• Perform routine repair and maintenance work across the campus, including basic carpentry, minor plumbing, painting, decorating, and fixture repairs.

• Conduct statutory health and safety site inspections, including fire alarm testing, emergency lighting checks, water hygiene/legionella monitoring, and perimeter checks.

• Oversee site cleanliness, litter clearing, refuse management, and gritting during winter conditions, coordinating with cleaning staff and external contractors.

• Assist with room setups, furniture arrangements, moving stock, and equipment transport for school assemblies, exams, parents' evenings, and external lettings.

• Record completed maintenance tasks, defects, and health and safety compliance checks using the school's online premises logging software.

Key Requirements

• Practical experience in caretaking, site maintenance, trades, or building facilities management (school experience is advantageous).

• Strong practical skills across general DIY, minor plumbing, joinery, painting, and maintenance techniques.

• Sound understanding of health and safety regulations, COSHH guidelines, and safe manual handling procedures.

• Excellent time management, communication skills, and a trustworthy, flexible attitude to shift patterns or keyholder duties.

• Legal right to work in the UK.
