Head of Psychology & Social Sciences – Secondary School in Bath (January Start)

A scholarly secondary school in Bath, Somerset, is seeking an ambitious Head of Psychology & Social Sciences to lead its popular Sixth Form pathways on a full-time, permanent basis starting in January.

Job Overview

Psychology and Social Sciences are among the highest-enrolling Sixth Form options at this institution. The successful candidate will take strategic responsibility for curriculum design, internal assessment moderation, and academic outcomes across A-Level Psychology, GCSE/A-Level Sociology, and vocational Criminology.

Working closely with senior leadership, you will line-manage department staff, refine scientific research methods training, develop 16-mark essay modeling frameworks, and prepare students for competitive university courses. This is a full-time, permanent contract.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic direction, curriculum design, and operational management for the Social Sciences faculty

  • Teach intellectually rigorous A-Level Psychology lessons across Year 12 and Year 13

  • Lead departmental coaching on empirical research methods, statistical analysis, and evaluative essay writing

  • Analyze Sixth Form progress metrics to implement targeted revision programs and mock exam interventions

  • Oversee extra-curricular psychology societies, guest lecture series, and university masterclasses

  • Manage department budgets, examination entries, and faculty CPD sessions

Candidate Requirements

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS, QTLS) with an honors degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, or Social Sciences

  • Proven track record of delivering top-tier Key Stage 5 examination outcomes

  • Prior experience in departmental coordination, key stage leadership, or peer coaching

  • An active enhanced DBS check on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)
