Are you a caring, organised and proactive individual with a passion for supporting young people's health and wellbeing? Do you have the confidence to respond calmly to medical situations and the skills to provide reassurance and practical support in a busy school environment?
We are seeking a dedicated School Medical Officer to join a welcoming secondary school in the Wirral. This is an important opportunity for someone with relevant first-aid or healthcare experience to help ensure students feel safe, supported and able to make the most of their time at school.
Working closely with the school's senior leadership team, pastoral staff, parents and external healthcare professionals, you will play a key role in managing day-to-day medical needs, responding to illness and injury, and supporting students with ongoing health conditions.
The successful candidate will bring compassion, sound judgement and excellent organisational skills, alongside a strong commitment to safeguarding and student welfare.
YOUR ROLE IN THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY
As School Medical Officer, you will oversee the school's day-to-day medical provision, providing appropriate first aid and support to students and staff when required. You will help maintain a safe and well-organised medical environment, ensuring health concerns are handled professionally and that relevant information is recorded accurately and confidentially.
You will also work collaboratively with colleagues to support students' individual medical needs, promote healthy practices and help remove barriers to learning associated with illness or health conditions.
Key Responsibilities
First Aid and Medical Support: Provide appropriate first aid and immediate care to students and staff who become unwell or sustain injuries during the school day.
Responding to Emergencies: Assess situations within the limits of your training, follow established procedures and seek emergency or further medical assistance when necessary.
Medical Room Management: Maintain a clean, safe and organised medical room, ensuring first-aid supplies and equipment are available and appropriately maintained.
Medical Records and Administration: Maintain accurate, up-to-date and confidential records of illnesses, injuries, medical incidents and treatment provided.
Parent and Carer Communication: Liaise sensitively with parents and carers regarding student illnesses, injuries, medical needs and any follow-up arrangements.
Supporting Ongoing Health Conditions: Help implement individual healthcare plans for students with conditions such as asthma, diabetes, allergies and other medical needs.
Medication Management: Support the safe handling and administration of medication in accordance with school policies, appropriate authorisation and relevant guidance.
Working with Pastoral Teams: Collaborate with teaching staff, pastoral colleagues, the designated safeguarding lead and senior leaders to support student welfare.
Health, Safety and Wellbeing: Contribute to a school environment that promotes good hygiene, health awareness and the wellbeing of the whole school community.
Educational Visits and Activities: Assist with medical arrangements for school trips, sports activities and other events, ensuring appropriate plans are in place.
Policy and Procedure Compliance: Follow school procedures relating to first aid, medical care, health and safety, safeguarding and the management of confidential information.
Identifying and Escalating Concerns: Recognise when a student may need additional support or professional medical assessment and communicate concerns to the appropriate person.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
We are looking for a dependable and approachable individual who can combine practical medical support with excellent communication and administration skills.
The ideal candidate will have:
Relevant first-aid, healthcare or medical training appropriate to the responsibilities of the role.
A current first-aid qualification relevant to the setting, or a willingness to undertake any required training.
Experience providing first aid, healthcare assistance or medical support, ideally within a secondary school or another child-focused environment.
The ability to remain calm, professional and reassuring when responding to illness, injury or unexpected medical situations.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to work with teenagers, parents, school staff and healthcare professionals.
Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage competing demands in a busy school.
A caring, patient and respectful approach to students with a wide range of health and wellbeing needs.
An understanding of safeguarding, confidentiality, data protection and school health and safety procedures.
The ability to recognise the limits of your training and escalate medical concerns appropriately.
Good IT and administrative skills, including maintaining electronic and paper-based records.
Experience in a role such as School Medical Officer, School First Aider, Healthcare Assistant, School Nurse or another relevant healthcare support position would be advantageous.
THE PERSONAL QUALITIES THAT MATTER
Beyond your qualifications and experience, you'll be someone students can approach with confidence and trust.
You'll demonstrate:
Compassion and empathy when supporting students who are unwell, injured, anxious or distressed.
Professionalism and discretion when handling sensitive medical information.
Confidence and sound judgement when assessing situations and deciding when to seek further assistance.
Reliability and initiative in maintaining medical provision and anticipating the needs of the school.
Teamwork and communication when working with pastoral staff, teachers, parents and external professionals.
You will understand that working in a secondary school requires sensitivity to the needs of young people, respect for their dignity and a commitment to helping every student feel safe and supported.
WHY JOIN THIS SCHOOL?
This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to a state secondary school and its wider community. You will help ensure that students receive appropriate care when they need it, while supporting the school's wider commitment to safeguarding, attendance and wellbeing.
For someone who enjoys working with young people and values being part of a collaborative school team, this is a rewarding opportunity to use your skills in a role where your contribution matters every day.
SAFEGUARDING AND RECRUITMENT
The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All staff are expected to uphold this commitment and follow the school's safeguarding and child protection procedures.
