School Information
A supportive secondary school in Wandsworth is looking to appoint a resilient and enthusiastic Behaviour Mentor to join its pastoral team. The school is committed to maintaining a positive learning environment in which pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for their actions, develop confidence and build respectful relationships with others.
The school recognises that some young people require additional guidance to manage challenges affecting their behaviour, attendance or engagement with learning. Its pastoral provision focuses on early intervention, consistent expectations and constructive relationships between pupils, staff and families.
The successful candidate will work alongside teachers, heads of year and senior pastoral staff to support pupils who need additional help accessing their education.
The Role
The Behaviour Mentor will provide targeted support to pupils experiencing behavioural difficulties, helping them understand expectations and develop strategies for managing challenging situations.
Responsibilities will include delivering one-to-one mentoring sessions, supporting small-group interventions and helping pupils reflect on incidents that may have affected their learning or relationships. The postholder will encourage pupils to identify triggers, recognise the consequences of their actions and develop more positive responses to difficult situations.
The successful applicant will work with teaching staff to identify pupils who may benefit from additional intervention. They will help monitor behaviour patterns, record mentoring sessions and communicate relevant observations to the pastoral team.
The role may involve supporting pupils during lesson transitions, helping them reintegrate into classroom activities following incidents and reinforcing the school's behaviour policy. The Behaviour Mentor will need to establish clear boundaries while remaining calm, approachable and consistent.
Where appropriate, the postholder will contribute to behaviour support plans, attendance initiatives and discussions with parents or carers. They will also help promote positive participation in school life, encouraging pupils to improve their organisation, emotional regulation and relationships with peers.
Safeguarding will remain central to the position. The successful candidate must recognise concerns, report them through the appropriate channels and maintain professional boundaries when working with vulnerable pupils.
Requirements
Candidates should have experience working with secondary-aged pupils in education, youth work, mentoring or pastoral support. Previous experience supporting challenging behaviour or social, emotional and mental health needs would be beneficial.
Strong communication skills, patience and resilience are essential. Applicants must be confident managing difficult conversations, maintaining appropriate boundaries and working collaboratively with teaching and pastoral colleagues.
The successful candidate should demonstrate a genuine commitment to helping young people overcome barriers to learning and improve their behaviour and engagement.
What the School Offers
The school offers a rewarding opportunity to support pupils' personal development and educational progress. The successful candidate will work within a dedicated pastoral team and gain valuable experience in behaviour management, mentoring and student wellbeing.
