Location: Dorchester, Dorset
School Type: Independent School
Position: History Teacher
Contract: To be confirmed
Start Date: To be confirmed
Every great story begins with a question…
What if your classroom could take pupils from the corridors of medieval power to the upheavals of revolution, the turning points of modern conflict and the lives of people whose stories deserve to be remembered?
An independent school in Dorchester is seeking an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and inspiring History Teacher who can turn the past into a subject that pupils genuinely want to explore. This is an opportunity for a passionate educator to spark debate, encourage independent thought and help young people understand how historical events continue to shape the world around them.
For the right candidate, there is also the opportunity to take on a Teaching and Learning Responsibility (TLR), offering the chance to contribute beyond the classroom, support departmental development and help shape the future direction of History within the school.
If you believe History should be questioned, debated and brought vividly to life, this could be your next chapter.
Your classroom. Their curiosity. A subject without limits.
As the History Teacher, you will create engaging, purposeful lessons that encourage pupils to look beyond dates and events and investigate the people, decisions, ideas and circumstances that shaped them.
You will help pupils develop the confidence to analyse evidence, challenge interpretations, construct convincing arguments and form their own informed conclusions.
What you will bring to the classroom
Plan and deliver engaging History lessons that meet the needs and abilities of pupils across the relevant age groups.
Make historical topics accessible, stimulating and intellectually challenging.
Develop pupils’ knowledge of key periods, events, individuals and historical themes.
Teach pupils to evaluate primary and secondary sources, recognise bias and consider differing historical interpretations.
Build strong analytical, research, essay-writing and independent learning skills.
Use questioning, discussion, debate and enquiry-based learning to deepen understanding.
Assess pupils’ progress effectively and provide clear, constructive feedback.
Adapt teaching approaches to support different learning needs and help every pupil fulfil their potential.
Maintain high expectations for achievement, behaviour, participation and academic progress.
Contribute to curriculum planning, departmental resources and the wider life of the school.
Communicate effectively with colleagues, pupils and parents where appropriate.
Promote a classroom culture where curiosity, respect, critical thinking and intellectual ambition are valued.
Beyond the classroom: a TLR opportunity
For a suitably experienced candidate, a TLR may be available. This is an opportunity to make a wider contribution to teaching, learning and the development of History across the school.
Depending on the successful candidate’s experience and the responsibilities agreed, the role may include:
Supporting the development and implementation of the History curriculum.
Contributing to departmental planning, schemes of work and teaching resources.
Sharing effective classroom practice and helping to maintain consistently high teaching standards.
Monitoring pupil progress and contributing to strategies that improve outcomes.
Supporting enrichment opportunities, historical projects, educational visits or co-curricular activities.
Contributing to departmental priorities and the ongoing development of the subject.
The TLR will be considered in line with the successful candidate’s experience, strengths and the responsibilities attached to the post. Candidates with leadership potential, a track record of contributing to departmental improvement or a desire to take the next step in their teaching career are encouraged to apply.
The person behind the passion
The school is looking for a teacher who combines strong subject knowledge with the ability to connect with pupils, communicate complex ideas clearly and create a genuine enthusiasm for learning.
You will ideally demonstrate:
A relevant degree in History or a closely related subject.
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification.
Strong subject knowledge and a genuine passion for historical enquiry.
The ability to plan and deliver well-structured, engaging lessons.
High expectations for pupil progress, achievement and classroom conduct.
Confidence in using assessment to inform teaching and support improvement.
Excellent communication, organisation and classroom management skills.
A reflective approach to teaching and a commitment to continuous professional development.
The ability to build positive, professional relationships with pupils and colleagues.
A commitment to inclusive teaching, pupil wellbeing and safeguarding.
Experience that could set you apart
Experience within an independent school, responsibility for curriculum development, involvement in enrichment activities or previous middle-leadership experience would be advantageous. However, applications from talented teachers who can demonstrate strong classroom practice and the potential to contribute to departmental leadership are also welcomed.
More than lessons: a chance to make your mark
Joining an independent school offers the opportunity to contribute to a wider educational community, where subject enthusiasm, academic development and pupils’ broader experiences all matter.
The successful candidate can look forward to:
The opportunity to teach History in a school committed to pupils’ academic development.
Scope to make lessons engaging, challenging and memorable.
The possibility of a TLR for the right candidate.
Opportunities to contribute to curriculum development and enrichment.
Collaboration with colleagues who share a commitment to effective teaching and learning.
Professional development and the opportunity to build on existing strengths.
The chance to make a lasting difference to pupils’ confidence, knowledge and understanding.
Why History matters
History helps pupils understand that the world they inherit was shaped by choices, conflicts, discoveries and ideas. It teaches them to question what they hear, examine the evidence before them and recognise that the past is rarely as simple as it first appears.
The right teacher can turn those lessons into something that stays with pupils long after they leave the classroom.
This appointment is an opportunity to do exactly that — while potentially taking the next step in your own professional journey through a TLR.
Safeguarding and professional standards
The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All staff are expected to share this commitment and follow the school’s safeguarding and child protection procedures.
The successful applicant will be required to complete the appropriate pre-employment checks, including an enhanced DBS check where applicable, and provide satisfactory references. All staff must uphold professional standards and comply with relevant policies relating to safeguarding, confidentiality, health and safety and data protection.
