English Teacher | TLR Opportunity
Independent School | Southampton, Hampshire
Inspire a Love of Literature. Shape Young Minds. Lead with Purpose.
Are you an English teacher who believes that the right book, the right question or the right conversation can change a student's perspective forever?
An established independent school in Southampton is looking for an enthusiastic, creative and ambitious English Teacher to join its teaching team. This is an exciting opportunity for a teacher who wants to deliver outstanding lessons, inspire a genuine love of English and make a lasting difference to students' academic and personal development.
For the right candidate, there is also the opportunity to take on additional responsibility through a Teaching and Learning Responsibility (TLR), offering the chance to contribute to curriculum development, support colleagues and play a wider role in the school's continued success.
Whether you are an experienced teacher seeking your next challenge or an ambitious practitioner ready to develop your leadership experience, this position offers the opportunity to bring fresh ideas, share your expertise and help students discover the power of language.
More Than Teaching English
English opens doors. It develops confidence, strengthens communication and enables young people to understand experiences beyond their own. We are looking for a teacher who can bring these possibilities to life in the classroom.
You will create an environment where students feel encouraged to question, explore, debate and express themselves. From analysing literary classics to developing persuasive writing and interpreting complex texts, you will help students become thoughtful readers, confident writers and articulate communicators.
Your role will include:
Delivering engaging English Language and Literature lessons that challenge, motivate and inspire students across the relevant key stages.
Teaching a broad range of texts, genres and writing styles, encouraging students to explore different voices, perspectives and ideas.
Developing students' reading comprehension, analytical skills, vocabulary, written expression and spoken communication.
Preparing students for relevant public examinations, including GCSE and A-Level where applicable.
Planning creative and well-structured lessons that make challenging concepts accessible to learners of different abilities.
Monitoring progress, assessing work and providing constructive feedback that helps students recognise their strengths and improve their performance.
Creating a positive classroom culture built on high expectations, mutual respect, curiosity and intellectual independence.
Using a range of teaching strategies and resources to support engagement, inclusion and academic progress.
Working collaboratively with colleagues to share effective practice and contribute to curriculum planning.
Encouraging wider engagement with English through reading initiatives, creative writing, debating, drama, literary events and other enrichment activities.
Communicating effectively with parents and colleagues to support students' progress and wellbeing.
An Opportunity to Lead, Not Just Teach
A TLR is available for the right candidate.
We recognise that excellent teachers often have more to contribute beyond their own classrooms. For a suitably experienced candidate, this role could provide an opportunity to take on additional responsibility and help shape the direction of English teaching within the school.
Depending on the successful candidate's experience and the school's priorities, the TLR may involve responsibilities such as:
Contributing to the development and implementation of the English curriculum.
Supporting departmental planning and the consistent delivery of high-quality teaching.
Sharing effective teaching strategies and contributing to colleagues' professional development.
Monitoring student progress and helping identify priorities for improvement.
Supporting literacy initiatives and promoting a strong reading culture across the school.
Contributing to departmental resources, assessment practices and wider school improvement priorities.
The precise responsibilities and TLR level will be discussed with the successful candidate and confirmed by the school.
Who Will Thrive in This Role?
We are looking for someone who combines strong subject knowledge with imagination, enthusiasm and a genuine commitment to helping young people succeed.
You will ideally bring:
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification.
A degree in English Literature, English Language or a related subject.
Experience teaching English in a secondary school or comparable educational setting.
Strong knowledge of English Language and Literature, including curriculum requirements and assessment expectations.
The ability to explain complex ideas clearly and encourage students to develop their own interpretations.
Excellent classroom management skills and the ability to establish a purposeful, supportive learning environment.
A commitment to high standards, inclusive teaching and continuous improvement.
Strong communication, organisational and interpersonal skills.
A collaborative approach and the confidence to contribute ideas to curriculum development.
A genuine passion for literature, language and the development of young people's confidence and critical thinking.
Previous experience of departmental responsibility, mentoring colleagues or leading curriculum initiatives would be particularly valuable for candidates interested in the TLR opportunity. Ambitious teachers who are ready to take their first step into subject leadership are also encouraged to apply.
Why Consider an Independent School?
An independent school environment can offer opportunities to contribute to a broad educational experience, develop meaningful relationships with students and take an active role in the wider school community.
This position offers the opportunity to:
Teach English in an environment that values academic ambition and personal development.
Bring your own ideas and creativity to lesson planning and curriculum delivery.
Encourage students to engage deeply with literature, language and the world around them.
Contribute to enrichment activities that extend learning beyond the classroom.
Develop professionally within a collaborative teaching environment.
Explore additional leadership responsibilities through a potential TLR.
Make a meaningful contribution to the school's academic culture and future development.
The Person Behind the Application
The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, reflective and approachable, with the confidence to challenge students while providing the encouragement they need to flourish.
You will understand that successful English teaching is about more than examination results. It is about helping students find their voice, think independently, appreciate different perspectives and communicate with clarity and confidence.
If you enjoy bringing texts to life, creating memorable learning experiences and helping students discover what they are capable of achieving, this could be an excellent next step in your career.
