An Outstanding secondary school in Havering is looking to appoint a dedicated Behaviour Support Mentor to strengthen its pastoral provision. The Role

The Behaviour Support Mentor will work with pupils who require additional guidance to engage successfully with their education. The postholder will help identify the underlying causes of behavioural difficulties, encourage positive choices and support pupils in developing the skills needed to participate constructively in lessons.

Responsibilities will include mentoring individual pupils, delivering targeted interventions and supporting students who have been removed from lessons or require additional pastoral guidance. The successful candidate will work alongside teaching staff to reinforce classroom expectations, promote respectful conduct and help pupils return to learning as effectively as possible.

The role will involve monitoring behaviour patterns, recording incidents, documenting interventions and communicating relevant information to pastoral leaders. The Behaviour Support Mentor will also contribute to reintegration plans for pupils returning to lessons following behavioural incidents or periods of absence.

Building trust will be central to the position. The successful applicant must be able to establish clear boundaries while remaining calm, approachable and consistent. They will encourage pupils to reflect on their actions, understand the consequences of their decisions and develop strategies for managing challenging situations.

There may also be opportunities to support attendance initiatives, work with families and contribute to wider school programmes focused on wellbeing, safeguarding and positive behaviour.

Requirements

Candidates should have experience working with children or young people in a school, youth work, mentoring or pastoral support setting. A confident understanding of behaviour management, safeguarding and professional boundaries is essential.

The successful applicant will be patient, resilient and able to respond appropriately to challenging situations. They should possess strong communication skills, the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and a genuine commitment to improving outcomes for young people.

Experience supporting pupils with social, emotional or behavioural needs would be beneficial. Applicants must be willing to follow school policies and contribute to a safe, inclusive learning environment.
