Our client is seeking a dependable, practical and enthusiastic Assistant School Caretaker to join the premises team at a well-established secondary school in Enfield, North London. The successful candidate will work alongside the Site Manager and wider premises team, helping maintain the school's buildings, classrooms, outdoor areas and shared facilities. Previous experience within a school or educational setting would be advantageous, as the role requires an understanding of site security, safeguarding procedures and the importance of keeping the premises operational throughout the school day.

Role Overview

As Assistant School Caretaker, you will support the day-to-day running of the school site by carrying out routine maintenance, responding to requests from staff and helping prepare facilities for lessons and school events. You will assist with opening and securing the premises as required and help ensure that the buildings and grounds remain tidy, safe and well maintained.

You will need to be organised, proactive and comfortable working independently on assigned tasks while communicating regularly with the Site Manager.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with opening and closing school buildings and securing access points when required.

• Carry out routine inspections of classrooms, corridors, toilets, playgrounds and external areas.

• Complete minor repairs to furniture, fixtures and fittings within your competence.

• Report electrical, plumbing, heating and structural issues requiring specialist attention.

• Help prepare halls, classrooms and other spaces for meetings, assemblies and school events.

• Maintain tidy entrances, pathways, playgrounds and other communal areas.

• Assist with moving furniture, equipment and deliveries safely.

• Monitor maintenance supplies and report when materials need replenishing.

• Support the site team with waste management and general premises duties.

• Follow school health and safety procedures and report potential hazards promptly.

• Ensure tools and equipment are stored safely after use.

• Work professionally around pupils, parents, visitors, contractors and school staff.

Experience and Skills

• Previous caretaking, maintenance, handyman or facilities experience is desirable.

• Good organisation and time-management skills.

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

• Reliable, punctual and willing to assist with a variety of site duties.
