Head of Science – Secondary School in Durham (January Start)

A high-achieving secondary school in Durham is seeking an ambitious Head of Science to lead its thriving STEM faculty on a full-time, permanent basis starting in January.

Job Overview

Science is a flagship department at this institution. The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership across Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, managing classroom teaching, laboratory safety, curriculum design, and exam outcomes across Key Stages 3, 4, and 5.

Working alongside senior leadership, a team of subject leads, and laboratory technicians, you will maintain high standards in GCSE Combined/Separate Sciences and A-Level disciplines while fostering scientific inquiry. This is a full-time, permanent contract.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic direction, curriculum oversight, and operational management for the Science faculty

  • Teach inspiring Biology, Chemistry, or Physics lessons across Key Stages 3, 4, and 5

  • Lead, line-manage, and mentor teaching staff and laboratory technical support

  • Enforce statutory CLEAPSS health and safety standards across all prep rooms and laboratories

  • Track student assessment data, implement targeted interventions, and oversee exam board preparation

  • Coordinate co-curricular STEM initiatives, university preparation, and practical science fairs

  • Start Date: January

  • Contract Type: Full-time, permanent contract

  • Location: Durham, County Durham

  • Salary / Pay Rate: Leadership Scale (L6–L10 equivalent)

  • Key Curriculum: AQA / Edexcel Science

Candidate Requirements

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or recognized UK credentials with an honors degree in a scientific discipline

  • Proven track record of strong academic outcomes at GCSE and A-Level alongside leadership experience

  • Up-to-date knowledge of CLEAPSS safety standards and secondary science specifications

  • An active enhanced DBS check on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)
