A supportive secondary school in Colchester is seeking a dedicated Learning Support Assistant to help pupils access the curriculum and make progress in their learning. The school is committed to inclusive education and recognises the importance of providing appropriate support for pupils with different academic, social and emotional needs.
The successful candidate will work alongside classroom teachers and the wider inclusion team to create a positive learning environment where pupils are encouraged to participate, develop independence and achieve their potential.
The Role
The Learning Support Assistant will provide in-class support across a range of subjects and year groups, helping pupils understand instructions, complete tasks and remain engaged during lessons. The postholder will work closely with teachers to reinforce learning objectives and adapt support according to individual needs.
Responsibilities will include explaining tasks, breaking down complex instructions, supporting literacy and numeracy activities and helping pupils organise their work. The successful candidate will encourage positive classroom behaviour and promote independence, ensuring that pupils receive appropriate guidance without becoming overly reliant on adult support.
The role may involve working with pupils who have special educational needs, additional learning needs or difficulties with concentration, confidence and emotional regulation. The Learning Support Assistant will help implement strategies recommended by teachers and the inclusion team, providing consistent support throughout the school day.
The successful applicant will also monitor pupil engagement, share relevant observations with teaching staff and contribute to discussions about progress and support strategies. Where required, they may assist with small-group interventions, revision activities and additional learning sessions.
Maintaining confidentiality, following safeguarding procedures and communicating professionally with colleagues will be essential aspects of the position.
Requirements
The ideal candidate will have experience working with children or young people in a school, tutoring, childcare or another relevant support environment. Strong communication skills, patience and the ability to build positive relationships are essential.
Applicants should be proactive, adaptable and confident supporting pupils with different learning needs. An understanding of safeguarding, inclusive education and behaviour management would be advantageous.
A relevant Teaching Assistant qualification or previous experience supporting pupils with SEND would be beneficial, although a positive attitude and willingness to learn are also valued.
What the School Offers
The school offers the opportunity to contribute directly to pupils' learning and development within a supportive secondary environment. The successful candidate will work with experienced teachers and support staff while developing their skills in classroom assistance and inclusive education.
