Head of Science – Secondary School in Hampshire (January Start)

A high-performing secondary school in Hampshire is seeking an ambitious Head of Science to lead its STEM faculty on a full-time, permanent basis starting in January.

Job Overview

The Head of Science provides strategic leadership across Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, overseeing curriculum design, assessment frameworks, laboratory safety, and academic outcomes across Key Stages 3, 4, and 5.

Working alongside senior leadership and leading a large team of subject specialists and technicians, you will drive teaching standards, manage departmental budgets, and expand extra-curricular STEM opportunities. This is a full-time, permanent contract.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic direction and curriculum leadership across Key Stage 3, GCSE, and A-Level Science subjects

  • Line-manage, mentor, and evaluate teaching staff and laboratory technicians across the faculty

  • Oversee CLEAPSS health and safety compliance, laboratory maintenance, and chemical safety protocols

  • Track student performance, implement intervention strategies, and maintain strong GCSE and A-Level outcomes

  • Organize extra-curricular STEM initiatives, science fairs, and university outreach programs

  • Serve as a senior subject expert on the school’s academic leadership group

  • Location: Prime Hampshire location with excellent transport links and staff parking

Candidate Requirements

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or recognized UK credentials (PGCE / SCITT)

  • Honors degree in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or a related scientific discipline

  • Proven track record of strong GCSE and A-Level outcomes alongside successful departmental leadership experience

  • Complete knowledge of CLEAPSS safety standards and secondary Science examination specifications

  • An active enhanced DBS check on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)
