Role Overview
A prestigious secondary school in Edgbaston, Birmingham, is seeking a meticulous, proactive, and safety-conscious Design & Technology Technician to join their technical support team ASAP. In this essential operational role, you will work closely with specialist DT teachers to prepare materials, set up apparatus, and maintain workshops for practical lessons across Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 (GCSE Design & Technology / Engineering / Product Design), and Key Stage 5 (A Level). You will take pride in maintaining an impeccably safe, well-organized learning environment equipped with both traditional machinery and modern digital manufacturing technology.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare timber, metals, polymers, and electronic components for daily practical classes and exam project work.
Perform routine servicing, safety inspections, and maintenance on workshop machinery (e.g., circular saws, band saws, pillar drills, wood/metal lathes) and CAD/CAM equipment (laser cutters, 3D printers, CNC routers).
Maintain rigorous health and safety protocols across prep rooms and workshops in strict compliance with DATA, CLEAPSS, and COSHH regulations.
Monitor material stock levels, manage department inventory, and process orders for consumables, tools, and safety gear.
Provide technical assistance to teachers and pupils during practical workshop sessions, promoting safe tool handling and equipment usage.
Key Requirements
Practical background or qualifications in Design & Technology, Engineering, Woodworking/Carpentry, Product Design, or a related field.
Hands-on experience operating traditional workshop machinery alongside modern digital fabrication tools (e.g., 2D Design, 3D printing, laser cutting).
Sound understanding of health and safety standards within an educational or technical workshop setting (DATA / CLEAPSS certification is highly desirable).
Strong organizational skills, a methodical approach to troubleshooting, and high attention to detail.
Legal right to work in the UK.
