Make a Difference Beyond the Classroom
A welcoming and supportive school in Watford is looking for a caring, resilient and highly organised Pastoral Officer to join its dedicated pastoral team.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working closely with young people and wants to play a meaningful role in helping pupils feel safe, supported and ready to learn.
As a key member of the school's pastoral provision, you will build positive relationships with pupils, identify concerns at an early stage and work alongside teachers, families and external professionals to ensure pupils receive the support they need.
No two days are likely to be the same. The role combines direct pupil support, safeguarding, attendance, communication with families and wider pastoral administration.
Your Role in the School
The Pastoral Officer will be an approachable and trusted presence for pupils, helping them navigate challenges and ensuring that wellbeing remains at the heart of school life.
You will:
Provide day-to-day pastoral support to pupils across the school.
Build positive, respectful and trusting relationships with pupils.
Act as a first point of contact for pupils experiencing personal, emotional, behavioural or social difficulties.
Listen to pupils' concerns and provide appropriate support, guidance and reassurance.
Identify emerging welfare or safeguarding concerns and report them through the appropriate channels.
Work closely with the Designated Safeguarding Lead and wider pastoral team.
Monitor pupil attendance and punctuality, following up concerns where appropriate.
Maintain accurate and confidential records of pastoral interventions and pupil support.
Communicate with parents and carers regarding attendance, behaviour, wellbeing and pastoral matters.
Work collaboratively with teachers and senior leaders to put appropriate support strategies in place.
Liaise with external agencies and professionals where required.
Support individual pupils and groups of pupils through targeted pastoral interventions.
Contribute to behaviour support and help promote positive attitudes and relationships across the school.
Support pupils during periods of transition or change.
Contribute to assemblies, wellbeing initiatives and wider pastoral programmes.
Help create an inclusive school environment where every pupil feels valued and respected.
The Person Behind the Role
The school is looking for someone who is approachable, emotionally intelligent and genuinely committed to helping young people succeed.
You will ideally bring:
Previous experience working with children or young people in a school, youth work, pastoral, safeguarding, care or community setting.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive relationships quickly.
A calm and reassuring approach when dealing with challenging or sensitive situations.
Excellent communication skills with pupils, parents, colleagues and external professionals.
Good understanding of safeguarding and child protection.
Strong organisational and administrative skills.
The ability to maintain accurate and confidential records.
Confidence dealing with sensitive information appropriately.
The ability to recognise when a pupil may require additional support.
A positive and solution-focused approach to behaviour and pastoral challenges.
Resilience and the ability to remain professional under pressure.
The confidence to work independently while contributing positively to a wider team.
A genuine commitment to improving pupil wellbeing and outcomes.
More Than Just a Pastoral Role
The most successful Pastoral Officers understand that supporting a pupil is not simply about responding when something goes wrong.
It is about building trust, noticing the small things and creating an environment where young people feel able to ask for help.
You may be the person who notices that a normally confident pupil has become withdrawn, supports a child who is struggling with friendships, helps a family understand the school's attendance expectations or works with colleagues to put the right support in place.
Your ability to listen, communicate and respond appropriately can have a lasting impact on a pupil's experience of school.
Working with Families and Professionals
Strong relationships with parents and carers are an important part of the role.
The Pastoral Officer will communicate professionally and sensitively with families, ensuring concerns are addressed appropriately and that parents and carers feel informed and supported.
You may also work alongside:
Teachers and form tutors.
Senior leaders and pastoral managers.
Safeguarding professionals.
School counsellors and wellbeing staff.
Educational psychologists and other specialists.
Social care and external support agencies.
A collaborative approach will be essential.
What the School Offers
In return, the school offers the opportunity to become part of a committed team that places pupil wellbeing and personal development at the centre of its work.
You can expect:
A supportive and collaborative pastoral environment.
A varied role with meaningful responsibility.
The opportunity to make a genuine difference to pupils' lives.
Supportive colleagues and experienced leadership.
Opportunities to develop your pastoral and safeguarding expertise.
A school culture that values positive relationships and inclusion.
The chance to contribute to wider wellbeing and pupil-support initiatives.
Safeguarding & Professional Standards
The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff to share this commitment.
The successful applicant will be subject to appropriate pre-employment checks, including an enhanced DBS check, satisfactory references and right-to-work verification.
All staff are expected to follow the school's safeguarding, child protection, confidentiality, data protection, health and safety and professional conduct policies.
Ready to Make a Difference?
If you are a compassionate, organised and resilient professional who wants to play a central role in supporting the wellbeing and development of young people, this could be an excellent opportunity.
The school is looking for someone who will bring energy, empathy and professionalism to its pastoral team and help ensure every pupil has the opportunity to feel safe, supported and ready to succeed.
