Please note that previous teaching experience in a school environment is required for this role.
Purpose of the Role
The Geography Teacher will be responsible for planning and delivering engaging, challenging and inclusive Geography lessons that inspire pupils to develop a strong understanding of the world around them.
The successful candidate will support pupils in developing geographical knowledge, analytical skills and an appreciation of physical and human environments. You will contribute to a positive learning culture, promote high academic standards and encourage pupils to become confident, curious and independent learners.
The role will involve teaching across the relevant age and ability ranges, assessing pupil progress, contributing to curriculum development and supporting the wider life of the school.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching & Learning
Plan and deliver high-quality Geography lessons that engage and challenge pupils of different abilities.
Teach physical and human Geography across the relevant age and ability ranges.
Develop pupils' geographical knowledge, understanding and analytical skills.
Use a variety of teaching methods, resources and technology to make learning purposeful and engaging.
Create a positive classroom environment where pupils feel confident to participate and share ideas.
Provide appropriate support and challenge to meet individual learning needs.
Encourage pupils to develop critical thinking, research and problem-solving skills.
Incorporate current geographical issues and real-world examples into teaching where appropriate.
Support pupils in preparing for GCSE examinations and other relevant assessments.
Promote high standards of behaviour, effort, attendance and academic achievement.
Assessment & Pupil Progress
Assess and monitor pupil progress in line with school and departmental expectations.
Provide constructive feedback to help pupils understand how they can improve.
Maintain accurate records of assessment, attainment and progress.
Identify pupils requiring additional support or challenge and implement appropriate strategies.
Contribute to moderation and departmental assessment activities.
Use assessment information to inform future planning and teaching.
Curriculum & Departmental Support
Contribute to the development and review of Geography schemes of work.
Work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure effective curriculum planning and delivery.
Contribute to departmental meetings, planning and wider school initiatives.
Share effective teaching strategies, resources and good practice with colleagues.
Support curriculum development in line with current educational expectations.
Contribute to fieldwork and enrichment opportunities where appropriate.
Classroom Management & Pastoral Support
Establish and maintain high standards of behaviour and classroom expectations.
Develop positive and professional relationships with pupils.
Support pupils' personal development, confidence and wellbeing.
Apply school behaviour policies consistently and fairly.
Communicate appropriately with parents and carers regarding pupil progress and concerns.
Work closely with pastoral and support staff to address individual pupil needs.
Wider School Responsibilities
Participate in school events, enrichment activities, trips and extracurricular opportunities.
Support Geography-related clubs, societies, competitions or fieldwork activities where appropriate.

Person Specification
Essential
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification.
Degree or strong academic background in Geography or a related subject.
Previous experience teaching Geography within a school environment.
Good knowledge of the Geography curriculum and relevant assessment requirements.
Strong classroom management and behaviour-management skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to plan and deliver engaging lessons for pupils of different abilities.
Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
Commitment to high standards of teaching, learning and pupil achievement.
Ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative department.
Reflective, adaptable and enthusiastic approach to teaching.
Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
Desirable
Experience teaching GCSE Geography.
Experience teaching A-Level Geography or other post-16 Geography qualifications.
Experience of planning and delivering geographical fieldwork.
Knowledge of GIS and other geographical technology.
Experience supporting extracurricular Geography activities.
Experience working with pupils with additional learning needs.
Evidence of continuing professional development within Geography or education.
