A thriving secondary academy in Bath is seeking a detail-oriented School HR & Payroll Officer to lead personnel administration, staff recruitment, and payroll processing for an immediate (ASAP) start.
This is an exceptional opportunity for an HR professional looking to oversee non-teaching personnel operations, single central record (SCR) management, and employment compliance in a secondary environment.
Job Overview
The HR & Payroll Officer manages the full employee lifecycle, ensuring strict adherence to Department for Education safeguarding regulations (KCSIE), employment law, and local authority payroll schedules.
Working closely with the School Business Manager and Headteacher, you will coordinate staff recruitment, issue employment contracts, manage sickness absence tracking, process monthly payroll inputs, and maintain the Single Central Record. This is a full-time, ongoing or permanent role.
Key Responsibilities
Maintain and update the school’s Single Central Record (SCR), conducting pre-employment vetting, DBS checks, and reference verification
Coordinate end-to-end staff recruitment workflows, including job advert placement, applicant shortlisting, and interview panel logistics
Process monthly payroll variations, sickness absence records, maternity/paternity leave, and pension submissions (TPS/LGPS)
Draft conditional offer letters, employment contracts, policy updates, and occupational health referral documentation
Serve as the main point of contact for staff inquiries regarding pay scales, leave entitlements, and HR policies
Maintain confidential electronic HR archives and produce workforce statutory reports for the Department for Education

Candidate Requirements
CIPD qualification (Level 3 or Level 5) or equivalent professional HR and payroll experience
Comprehensive knowledge of school pre-employment vetting procedures, KCSIE guidelines, and Single Central Record audits
Proficiency in school database management platforms (SIMS, Arbor, Bromcom) and payroll software systems
High level of discretion, numerical accuracy, and excellent professional communication skills
An active enhanced DBS check on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)
