Role Overview
A progressive secondary school in Walsall is seeking a practical, detail-oriented, and safety-conscious Design & Technology Technician to join their DT and Engineering department ASAP. Working alongside specialist teaching staff, you will take day-to-day responsibility for preparing workshop spaces, maintaining tools and machinery, and organizing raw materials for practical lessons across Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 (GCSE Design Technology / Resistant Materials / Graphics), and Key Stage 5 (A Level Design & Technology / BTEC Engineering).
Key Responsibilities
Prepare materials, hand tools, and apparatus for daily practical sessions involving timber, metals, polymers, and electronics.
Maintain, service, and conduct routine safety inspections on traditional workshop machinery (e.g., pillar drills, band saws, circular saws, wood lathes) and CAD/CAM equipment (3D printers, laser cutters).
Enforce strict health and safety standards across prep rooms and workshops in accordance with DATA, CLEAPSS, and COSHH regulations.
Monitor inventory, manage department stock levels, and coordinate the procurement of consumable materials and specialized tools.
Assist teaching staff during practical workshop lessons, providing technical support and guidance to pupils on safe tool usage.
Key Requirements
Practical qualification or professional background in Design & Technology, Carpentry, Engineering, Product Design, or a related field.
Prior experience operating traditional workshop machinery and modern digital fabrication tools (e.g., laser cutters, 3D printers, CAD software).
Strong understanding of health and safety regulations within a workshop or school setting (DATA / CLEAPSS training is highly desirable).
Excellent organizational skills, practical problem-solving ability, and a proactive approach to maintenance.
